Service Learning

Program Description:
As an organization, we believe that community service is a vital component of youth development. Each spring for the past 10 years we have taken a group of at-risk teens, peer mentors, caring adults and professionals on a week long service learning trip to the Dominican Republic where we work with locals to help build a hospital and bring basic health care services to Haitian refugee villages throughout the country. In preparation for the trip, participants work together and independently to help raise money for construction and medical supplies that are used during the week.

During the week, participants engage with locals to gain a deeper understanding of the differences and similarities between our culture and theirs. Teens learn skills in collaboration – with both peers and adults – through various problem-solving activities that they face during the week. Overall, it is a rich and meaningful experience for all involved.
